Nestle’s Dairy Whitener Faces Safety Concerns in India
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently flagged a sample of Nestle’s low-fat dairy whitener as "unsafe" and "substandard" following an inspection at The Lalit hotel in New Delhi. While the regulatory body has ordered the hotel to halt the sale of the product, it has yet to release the full technical report behind these findings. This development follows a similar incident in September, where the FSSAI initiated legal action against the multinational giant after a baby food sample failed to meet quality standards.
In response to the allegations, Nestle India has firmly defended its product, asserting that it is safe for consumption and adheres to all relevant legal standards. The company claims the regulator’s assessment was flawed because it incorrectly compared total phosphorus levels against limits meant only for added phosphorus, failing to account for the mineral’s natural presence in dairy ingredients. Nestle stated that it is actively collaborating with authorities to provide data clarifying this discrepancy, even as both the regulator and the hotel remain silent on the matter for now.
