Yemen Launches Fresh Military Campaign Against Houthi Rebels
Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi has officially declared the commencement of a nationwide military campaign aimed at reclaiming territory currently held by Houthi rebels. In a televised address, al-Alimi emphasized that the objective of this operation is to restore the governmentâs authority across the entire country. This move marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, which has been fueled by regional tensions and the involvement of a Saudi-led coalition that has backed the recognized government since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2015.
The situation on the ground remains volatile, with the Houthis maintaining momentum following a rapid advance that allowed them to seize control of the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Recent skirmishes near Taiz have further threatened the government's stability, as rebel forces work to choke off critical supply routes between Taiz and the temporary capital, Aden. As the Houthis solidify their hold on both coastal and mountainous terrain, analysts warn that the potential siege of Taiz could trigger a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. With the World Food Programme reporting that a vast majority of families are already struggling with severe food insecurity, the renewed fighting poses a grave risk to millions of civilians trapped in the crossfire.
