Viral Airport Incident Sparks Debate Over OFW Assistance
A Filipina worker returning home from Dubai recently sparked a national outcry after posting a tearful video claiming she was denied entry to the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) lounge at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Remy Ropero Santos, who had spent two years in Dubai and six years in Kuwait, explained that she was stranded without cash for onward travel to Romblon and hoped to find food and shelter in the lounge. Despite her appeals to staff, she was initially turned away because she did not have a connecting flight, a policy she described as a painful example of mistreatment toward the very workers who sustain the national economy through their remittances.
The incident prompted an immediate response from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), which claimed that security footage shows Santos was eventually granted access and provided with assistance. While the agency maintained that the lounge is strictly intended for those with connecting flights, they have promised a thorough investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the public debate continues, with many migrant workers and advocates arguing that the current policies are too rigid. Critics, including Migrante International, are calling for a policy overhaul, suggesting that the government should prioritize the welfare of returning citizens by allowing all OFWs access to these facilities, regardless of their travel itinerary, especially given the mandatory membership dues they contribute throughout their careers.
