India and Switzerland Strengthen Economic and Professional Ties
In a significant step to deepen bilateral relations, India and Switzerland have exchanged multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) following high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin in New Delhi. A focal point of the discussions was the successful implementation of the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which marks a milestone as Indiaâs first trade pact with a European bloc. Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism that this agreement will serve as a catalyst for growth, aiming to attract $100 billion in investments and generate a million direct jobs over the next 15 years, while simultaneously boosting Indian exports in sectors like agriculture, textiles, and pharmaceuticals.
Beyond economic metrics, both leaders emphasized the importance of fostering human connections. The newly signed Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement and the Young Professionals Agreement are set to create valuable opportunities for researchers, students, and professionals to work and study across borders. As President Parmelin leads his delegation through various engagements, including the upcoming India-EFTA Prosperity Summit, the visit underscores the robust partnership between the two nations. With Switzerland serving as India's primary investment partner within the EFTA, these high-level dialogues are expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation in vital industries such as biotech, banking, and sustainability.
