5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Border Region; Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattled the border region between western Xizang and India on Tuesday, October 6, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The tremors were notably felt as far as the Delhi-NCR area, causing concern among local residents. While the EMSC reported the initial magnitude, Indiaâs National Centre for Seismology (NCS) identified the epicentre near Chamoli in Uttarakhand, recording the intensity at a 4.9 magnitude. Authorities are currently assessing the impact, and as of now, there have been no confirmed reports regarding casualties or structural damage.
Earlier the same day, seismic activity was also reported in the northeastern part of India. A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Nagaon district of Assam during the early hours of Tuesday. Data from the NCS indicated that the quake originated at a depth of 33 kilometres, with its epicentre pinpointed at 26.428 North latitude and 93.060 East longitude. These back-to-back seismic events have kept disaster management teams on high alert across the affected states.
