Indian Sailors Injured in Strait of Hormuz Tanker Attack
The Indian government has confirmed that 11 of its nationals were injured following a projectile strike on a Panama-flagged tanker, the MT On Peace, while it navigated the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. Out of the 19 crew members onboard, 17 were Indian citizens, and the injured personnel were swiftly evacuated with the help of Omani authorities to a medical facility in Khasab for treatment. New Delhi has issued a strong condemnation of the incident, describing the assault as a grave threat to the safety of global maritime commerce.
This incident marks yet another dangerous development for Indian mariners, who represent a significant portion of the global merchant shipping workforce and have faced increasing peril since regional hostilities flared earlier this year. With tensions rising as Iran attempts to assert dominance over this critical energy transit route and the U.S. continues its counter-enforcement efforts, the security of international waterways remains precarious. Indian officials have called for an immediate halt to these attacks, emphasizing that the protection of civilian infrastructure and seafarers is essential for regional stability and the restoration of safe, unrestricted trade.
