Kenya Records First Ebola Fatality Linked to Congo Outbreak
Kenya has officially confirmed its first Ebola-related death after a citizen, who had spent the last seven years residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo, passed away in Nairobi. The individual had been suffering from symptoms for roughly a month before traveling through Uganda and eventually landing in Kenyaâs capital this past Saturday. Despite undergoing health screenings upon arrival, the patient was hospitalized shortly thereafter with severe symptoms, including internal bleeding and fever, before dying on Monday.
In response to the tragedy, authorities have placed 29 individualsâcomprised of healthcare workers and family membersâunder strict quarantine for monitoring. Officials are also urgently working to track down passengers and crew from the flight the man took to reach Nairobi. While health ministries in Kenya and Uganda are under scrutiny regarding how the patient bypassed border controls and airport screenings, international bodies like the WHO and the Africa CDC are providing support to bolster containment efforts. Experts believe the manâs symptoms may have been temporarily suppressed by medication during his transit, complicating detection efforts during his journey.
