Tragedy in Angeles City: Search Continues for Missing Construction Workers

Mon, May 25, 2026(90d ago)World

Rescue efforts in Angeles City, Philippines, have entered a critical phase as emergency teams utilize thermal imaging technology to locate survivors trapped beneath the debris of a collapsed nine-storey building. The disaster, which occurred over the weekend, has claimed at least four lives, with two workers tragically passing away despite initial rescue attempts. Authorities report that approximately 17 people remain missing, most of whom were construction workers sleeping at the site when the structure gave way. The recovery mission remains incredibly delicate, as rescuers must navigate the unstable ruins carefully to avoid triggering further collapses.

The incident has sparked serious concerns regarding site safety and regulatory oversight. It was revealed that the project had previously been shut down in September 2024 due to significant violations, including a lack of essential safety gear like hardhats and harnesses, as well as poor lighting. Although the contractor was permitted to resume work after supposedly meeting requirements, the sudden collapse has left families like that of Alfredo Albis—who is searching for two missing cousins—in a state of agonizing uncertainty. As the search for signs of life continues, officials have stated that if the scanners fail to detect survivors, they will transition to using heavy earthmoving equipment to clear the site and recover the remaining bodies.
