Heavy Security in New Delhi Amid Election Protest Protests
Authorities in India have mobilized over 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel across the capital ahead of a major protest scheduled for Saturday. The demonstration, which is being fueled by tensions surrounding the Election Commission of Indiaâs (ECI) recent "special intensive revision" of voter rolls, aims to demand the resignation of ECI chief Gyanesh Kumar. While the commission maintains that the revision process is necessary to eliminate duplicate or ineligible voters, opposition leadersâincluding Rahul Gandhi of the Congress partyâargue that the exercise is a strategic move to disenfranchise voters and favor the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
As the capital braces for the upcoming march, heavy barricades have been erected throughout the city center to restrict access to Jantar Mantar, the designated protest zone for which authorities have denied authorization. The movement has gained momentum with the involvement of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a group that recently gained national attention for its successful campaign against a former education minister. Despite claims from activists that police have begun preemptively detaining supporters to stifle the rally, law enforcement remains firm in its presence, turning New Delhi into a high-security zone as political friction between the government and the opposition continues to boil over.
