Elon Musk’s Standoff Over Starlink’s Indian Entry
Elon Musk recently expressed his frustration over Starlink’s delayed entry into India, sparking a notable online exchange with Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. After Gandhi commented on the situation with a cryptic remark about the state of the Indian business landscape, Musk described the ongoing hurdles as “troubling.” The SpaceX CEO has been vocal about his dissatisfaction, claiming that despite five years of adherence to local regulations and successful licensing in over 165 countries, Starlink remains sidelined in India. He has suggested that powerful domestic business interests are working to maintain a monopoly, describing the blockage as a disservice to the Indian public.
In response to these allegations, India’s Ministry of Communications has officially denied any bias, asserting that its regulatory framework is both fair and transparent. Government officials pointed out that multiple satellite service providers are currently undergoing the same licensing process, emphasizing that strict security and data safety compliance are mandatory for all applicants. Despite this regulatory friction, Starlink leadership remains optimistic; during the India Mobile Congress, Vice President Lauren Dreyer noted that the company has already invested in local infrastructure, including gateway sites and data localization efforts, as they continue to push for a formal market launch.
