Delhi Faces Continued Unrest Amid Calls for Election Chief’s Resignation
New Delhi is preparing for a second day of youth-led demonstrations as protesters demand the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The tension follows a weekend of heavy police intervention, during which over 2,000 individuals were detained and the city center was effectively locked down. While key figures like the "Cockroach Janta Party" founder Abhijeet Dipke and influencer Dhruv Rathee were released by a magistrate on the condition that they abstain from further unrest, the city remains under heavy security watch. Despite the reopening of metro stations and the restoration of mobile internet services, the atmosphere in the capital remains volatile.
The demonstrations, dubbed "Season 2" by activists, were sparked by widespread concerns over massive deletions in electoral rolls, with critics alleging that the removal of 130 million names unfairly favors the ruling BJP. While the government and election officials maintain that the verification process was legitimate and free of political bias, opposition parties and international observers have raised alarms regarding the potential suppression of democratic rights. The government, however, has firmly rejected international criticism, labeling it an unwarranted interference in national affairs as the movement continues to push for systemic electoral reforms.
