New Social Media Restrictions for Minors in Turkey Take Effect November 1

Sun, Oct 11, 2026(1h ago)World

Starting November 1, Turkey will officially implement a nationwide ban on social media usage for individuals under the age of 15. This legislative move, which was recently published in the country's official state journal following parliamentary approval this past April, mandates that online platforms must now enforce strict technical safeguards. Tech companies operating in the country are required to integrate robust age verification systems to ensure that services designed to be addictive are not accessible to young users.

This policy aligns Turkey with an increasing global trend as nations strive to protect the younger generation from the negative impacts of the digital world. Similar to initiatives currently being explored or implemented in countries like Australia, France, and Britain, the goal is to mitigate risks such as screen addiction, sleep deprivation, cyberbullying, and body image issues. By holding platforms accountable for their influence on minors, these governments hope to foster a safer online environment for children and teenagers alike.
