Two Leaders of India’s Cockroach Janta Party Jailed After Protest
Two prominent figures from the youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, have been remanded to five days in judicial custody following their arrest on Wednesday. The detentions stem from a bold act of defiance at Jantar Mantar, a historic protest site in New Delhi that was recently removed from the list of authorized demonstration areas by local police. Video footage circulating online captures the duo climbing over security barricades and waving the national flag before being quickly intercepted and taken into custody by authorities.
The incident is part of a larger, growing movement where activists and opposition members are calling for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. Critics allege that the election body has been tampering with voter registries to favor the incumbent government, a charge that officials have consistently and categorically denied. While the site remains heavily fortified and restricted by police, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has publicly condemned the arrests, framing the legal action against his colleagues as an attempt to suppress dissent for the simple act of displaying the national flag.
