Concerns Over Dropped Charges Against Philippine VP Sara Duterte
The decision by Philippine government prosecutors to drop three of the four impeachment charges against Vice President Sara Duterte has sparked widespread frustration, even among those pushing for her removal. By abandoning allegations of public fund misuse, grave threats, and bribery, the prosecution has left only the charge of unexplained wealth standing. Critics, including former lawmaker Raoul Manuel and various activist groups, argue that this move effectively shields Duterte from full accountability, denying the public and the Senate impeachment court a clear verdict on serious accusations of corruption and misconduct.
Legal experts and members of the defense team have also raised eyebrows, questioning the procedural logic behind the withdrawal. Human rights lawyer Ephraim Cortez suggested that dropping the charges before formally presenting evidence effectively functions as an acquittal, preventing the burden of proof from ever shifting to the defense. While lead prosecutor Gerville Luistro maintains that the focus remains on the strongest evidence, the move has been slammed by Duterte’s own counsel, Sheila Sison, as "strange" and unfair. With the trial now narrowed, presiding senator-judge Francis Escudero has ordered the defense to focus on the remaining financial allegations, with proceedings expected to wrap up by the end of November.
