The Controversy Surrounding Imran Khan’s Participation in Indian Protests
Bollywood actor Imran Khan, best known for his roles in hits like Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, has recently found himself at the center of a political firestorm after participating in a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan. The demonstration, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Following his involvement, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya filed a complaint, alleging that the actor abused his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status by engaging in political activities, which has led to calls for his departure from the country.
Although Khan holds an OCI card, which grants him multiple-entry privileges, he remains a United States citizen rather than an Indian national. Under Indian law, specifically the Immigration and Foreigners Act, the government maintains the authority to issue a "Leave India Notice" to foreign nationals if they are found to be in violation of regulations or deemed a security concern. While the debate regarding the legitimacy of the voter roll revisions he protested against continues, Khan’s legal standing remains precarious, as authorities possess the statutory power to revoke his ability to reside in the country based on these recent actions.
