Katie Zacharia’s Credibility Questioned Following Bar Exam Controversy
Newly appointed White House press secretary Katie Zacharia has found herself at the center of a growing controversy regarding her professional qualifications. After previously describing herself as a lawyer on social media and television, it has come to light that the 41-year-old does not hold a license to practice law in the United States. While Zacharia earned a law degree from Pepperdine University in 2011, reports indicate she failed the California bar exam and never retook it. Zacharia recently addressed the scrutiny, explaining that she was distracted by a move to China at the time and felt the license was unnecessary for her international work.
The situation has sparked a formal complaint from the watchdog group Campaign for Accountability, which is urging the State Bar of California to investigate whether Zacharia misled the public by claiming to be a lawyer without proper authorization. Under California law, such misrepresentation can carry legal consequences. Despite the backlash and a shaky initial briefing where she struggled with prepared remarks, the Trump administration has stood by her. Communications Director Steven Cheung defended her appointment, insisting that she is exceptionally qualified to represent the administration, and President Trump himself expressed satisfaction with her performance despite the mounting questions about her background.
