Strong 5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Pakistan's Balochistan Region
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 rattled Pakistan’s Balochistan province this Saturday. Data from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) pinpointed the epicenter at a relatively shallow depth of 15 kilometers. This latest seismic event follows another tremor recorded earlier this June, when a 5.3 magnitude quake hit the country at a depth of 75 kilometers, underscoring the region's ongoing vulnerability to ground instability.
Pakistan remains one of the world's most earthquake-prone nations, largely due to its precarious position along the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Significant portions of the country, particularly Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, sit dangerously close to major fault lines. While these northern and western regions face the highest risks, provinces like Punjab and Sindh also remain susceptible to seismic activity due to their location along the edge of the Indian Plate.
