FSSAI Cracks Down on Major Brands and Hotels Over Safety Violations
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a widespread enforcement drive, targeting prominent e-commerce giants and hospitality brands for failing to adhere to safety and advertising standards. Flipkart, BigBasket, and Gemini Edibles & Fats India Limited have been served notices regarding "Freedom Cooking Rice Bran Oil," which was promoted with unauthorized health claims—specifically regarding cholesterol management and heart health—that violate the 2018 advertising regulations. Additionally, regulators flagged Gemini Edibles for operating an e-commerce platform without the necessary central licensing.
Beyond the retail sector, the FSSAI has taken stern action against luxury hospitality and food manufacturers. The Radisson Blu Hotel in New Delhi received an improvement notice following reports of severe hygiene lapses, including pest infestations, rusted equipment, and the use of cooking oil with improper polar compound levels. Meanwhile, DNV Food Products saw its license suspended due to filthy manufacturing conditions, and Jhanvitanni faced a total license cancellation for ignoring previous directives and operating despite an earlier suspension. All affected entities have been ordered to address these critical violations immediately or face further legal consequences, including permanent closure.
