Nationwide Power Outage Hits Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka experienced a massive, country-wide blackout this past Saturday that left citizens without electricity for more than two hours. Officials from the state-run Electricity Distribution Lanka reported that the national grid collapsed suddenly, with preliminary assessments pointing to a surge in solar power generation that overwhelmed the system's current capacity. Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka has urged residents with rooftop solar panels to keep their systems disconnected to help technicians stabilize the grid and restore services in a controlled, phased manner.
This incident highlights a growing struggle for the nation’s infrastructure as it attempts to integrate more renewable energy. While the government is aggressively pushing to boost solar capacity to nearly 4,400 megawatts within the next three years, the current grid is clearly struggling to manage the influx during peak daylight hours when solar production often dwarfs actual consumer demand. With this being the second major solar-related failure in recent times, authorities face a mounting challenge in balancing their ambitious green energy goals with the urgent need for a more resilient and flexible power distribution network.
