Tragedy Strikes Kolkata Durga Puja Festival: 17 Dead in Stampede
A devastating stampede at a Durga Puja celebration in Kolkata, India, has left at least 17 people dead and 25 others injured. According to local officials, including West Bengal’s Chief Minister Suvendhu Adhikari, the tragedy unfolded on Saturday night when sudden rainfall prompted a panicked rush among the large crowd gathered outside a pavilion. Among the victims was a seven-year-old girl, and authorities have confirmed that at least six of the deceased have been identified so far.
Eyewitness accounts and police reports suggest that a chaotic announcement triggered the surge, as attendees scrambling for shelter began pushing and shoving, ultimately leading to people falling and being trampled. This heartbreaking incident highlights the persistent issue of crowd control and safety failures at large-scale religious gatherings in India. Unfortunately, such disasters have become a recurring concern in the country, following a string of recent fatal stampedes at various public events, including religious fairs and political rallies, which continue to raise serious questions about event management and public safety protocols.
