Tensions Erupt: Israeli Settlers Clash with European Diplomats in West Bank
A peaceful visit to the West Bank village of Taybeh turned violent on Saturday when a group of masked Israeli settlers ambushed a convoy of diplomats from France, Belgium, and Poland. The delegation had arrived to show solidarity during the Palestinian olive harvest, but the situation quickly spiraled as settlers confronted the group, physically assaulting 78-year-old French mayor Bernard Baudoux. Video footage captured the aftermath, showing the mayor slumped against a vehicle while wearing his traditional French tricolor sash. While he sustained injuries during the scuffle, he fortunately did not require hospitalization.
This disturbing incident is part of a broader pattern of heightened hostility surrounding this year's olive harvest, as settlers have increasingly sought to obstruct Palestinians from gathering their crops. In recent days, other journalists and activists have faced similar attacks, including a Washington Post photographer who suffered serious injuries. Although Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar issued a condemnation of the assault on the diplomatic convoy, he also deflected some responsibility by noting a lack of military coordination for the trip. As Israeli authorities launch an investigation into the matter, the attack serves as a stark reminder of the volatile atmosphere currently gripping the region.
