Pope Leo Set for Hospital Discharge Following Lung Cancer Surgery
Pope Leo is preparing to head home this Saturday, just four days after undergoing a successful operation to remove a portion of his right lung. The Vatican confirmed that recent medical evaluations, including chest imaging and blood tests, show the 71-year-old pontiff is recovering well. Marking his return to public life, the Pope is scheduled to lead his regular weekly prayers in St. Peter’s Square this Sunday. While the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma caused widespread concern shortly after his election in May 2025, medical teams reported that the surgery was completed without any complications.
Despite the serious diagnosis, the Vatican appears committed to maintaining the Pope’s demanding schedule. Preparations are reportedly still underway for his extensive tour of Peru, Argentina, and Uruguay scheduled for early November. Although officials have not yet released specific details regarding the extent of the tumor, Cardinal Pietro Parolin noted that the Pope’s future itinerary may be adjusted as needed to accommodate his ongoing recovery. To reassure the public, the Vatican recently shared images of the pontiff celebrating Mass and standing on his own, signaling his intent to resume his duties as quickly as possible.
