Israeli Authorities Arrest Eight Following Violent Settler Attacks
Israeli law enforcement confirmed on Monday the detention of eight suspects linked to a series of violent altercations in the West Bank that occurred over the weekend. While authorities have remained tight-lipped regarding the specific identities or formal charges against the individuals, the investigation—which reportedly involves the Shin Bet domestic security agency—comes amid heightened tensions. These arrests are particularly notable, as the prosecution of Israeli settlers for such offenses is historically infrequent.
The incidents in question include a physical assault on Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine, who was documented being attacked by masked settlers while covering an olive harvest on Friday. A separate confrontation occurred on Saturday when a group of European diplomats and a French mayor were targeted by masked individuals in a different sector of the West Bank. These attacks have sparked international outrage, drawing sharp rebukes from the United States, France, Belgium, and Poland. While some Israeli officials have condemned the violence, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s response has been more guarded, suggesting that the diplomats had entered a volatile area without proper military coordination. These events underscore a broader trend of surging settler violence, with human rights organizations reporting over 170 incidents since late September alone.
