UN Human Rights Experts Call for Probe into India’s Protest Crackdowns
A group of independent UN experts has formally requested an impartial investigation into how Indian authorities handled recent demonstrations, citing credible reports of excessive force and the mistreatment of protesters. Over the past few weeks, students and opposition parties have taken to the streets to challenge the government, specifically criticizing the revision of voter rolls and earlier controversies surrounding leaked exam papers. The experts highlighted that law enforcement has frequently utilized batons and physical suppression against largely peaceful student demonstrators, while also implementing broad assembly bans and digital surveillance tactics that stifle civic expression.
The Indian government has maintained its standard position of rejecting these international concerns, labeling them as unwarranted meddling in domestic affairs. Officials have insisted that their security forces operate strictly within the bounds of the law, while the Election Commission has defended the voter roll purges as a necessary administrative effort to remove ineligible entries. Despite these assurances, the crackdown continues to face heavy criticism from global human rights organizations, who echo the UN’s demand for an immediate end to the use of force and the restoration of fundamental assembly rights.
