Bangladesh Demands Answers Over Execution of Nationals in Saudi Arabia
The Bangladeshi government is pressing Saudi authorities for transparency following the recent execution of two of its citizens in Makkah. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam confirmed that Dhaka has formally requested copies of the court verdicts, specific details regarding the charges, and an explanation as to why the Bangladeshi diplomatic mission was kept in the dark throughout the legal process. The individuals, identified as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, were sentenced to death under taâzirâa discretionary form of punishment under Islamic lawâafter being convicted of committing an indecent act inside a mosque. The executions were carried out on October 14, though Saudi officials have yet to disclose the specific location of the incident.
Amid the fallout, Saudi authorities have moved to address online misinformation, labeling a viral video purported to show the executions as entirely false. As Bangladesh weighs its next steps, the case has highlighted the complexities of managing the welfare of its massive diaspora in the Kingdom. With over 3.5 million Bangladeshi workers residing in Saudi Arabia, the government is proceeding cautiously, aiming to review all official documentation before determining further diplomatic action. Saudi officials, meanwhile, have reiterated their commitment to upholding judicial integrity and protecting the sanctity of their holy sites.
