Dubai Police Crack Down on Ramadan Beggars

Dubai Police have launched an aggressive campaign against begging during Ramadan, aiming to preserve the emirate’s civilized image by combating both traditional and digital forms of begging. This initiative, part of the broader “Combat Begging” campaign, targets organized and individual begging, emphasizing the exploitation of public generosity through deceptive tactics such as using children or fake medical emergencies. Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi highlighted the success of these efforts, noting a yearly reduction in beggars due to strict enforcement. The campaign also focuses on digital scams, urging the public to report suspicious activities via the 901 hotline or the Dubai Police app.

Dubai Police have intensified patrols in areas where beggars are commonly found, such as near mosques and markets. The campaign aims to protect the community from fraudulent methods used by beggars, who often exploit people’s compassion during significant times like Ramadan. Beggars have been known to use children, patients, and people of determination to elicit sympathy. The public is advised to be cautious and report beggars immediately, rather than interacting with them out of pity.

The campaign targets both traditional and non-traditional forms of begging, including online scams for fake charitable causes. Official entities and charitable organizations are recommended for those needing financial assistance, ensuring donations reach genuine recipients. The public is encouraged to report beggars via the contact center or the ‘Police Eye’ service on the Dubai Police app, and to report online scams through the ‘E-crime’ platform.

Dubai Police have arrested numerous beggars in recent years, with penalties including fines of up to AED 5,000 and imprisonment for up to three months. Organized begging can lead to even more severe penalties, including fines of at least AED 100,000 and jail time of up to six months. The campaign emphasizes the importance of maintaining a dignified community image and protecting residents from begging-related crimes.

The initiative aligns with Dubai’s broader efforts to ensure a respectful and safe environment during Ramadan, encouraging community involvement in reporting suspicious activities. By focusing on both traditional and digital forms of begging, Dubai Police aim to create a more secure and compassionate society where genuine charitable efforts are supported through official channels.
