Dubai Schools Go Remote on Fridays During Ramadan

Private schools in Dubai are embracing a new initiative that allows students to engage in remote learning on Fridays throughout the holy month of Ramadan. This decision reflects a broader effort by the UAE to support family unity and student well-being during this significant period. Michelle Thomas, Principal/CEO of GEMS Al Barsha National School, emphasized that offering remote learning options helps students balance their academic responsibilities with spiritual and family commitments, fostering a more holistic educational experience.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure flexibility in education. Schools will remain open for students who prefer in-person learning, ensuring that they receive structured, high-quality education in a supportive environment. Meanwhile, those opting for remote learning will benefit from advanced digital platforms and interactive teaching methods. This approach aligns with Dubai’s announcement allowing private school students to study remotely on Fridays, with exceptions for mandatory in-person exams.

Kelvin Hornsby, CEO/Principal of GEMS World Academy – Abu Dhabi, praised the initiative as visionary, supporting family, well-being, and balance during Ramadan. He highlighted the importance of flexibility, noting that offering in-person learning when needed demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to inclusivity and personalized education. GEMS schools will ensure a safe and supportive environment for both remote and in-person learners, with adjustments for fasting students.

The UAE Ministry of Education has also announced that public schools will adopt remote learning on Fridays during Ramadan, reinforcing the country’s commitment to student well-being and academic flexibility. This initiative is complemented by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge’s Service Learning Friday initiative, which focuses on integrating academic knowledge with real-world impact through community engagement and service learning activities.

Throughout Ramadan, schools in Abu Dhabi will engage in service learning instead of traditional lessons every Friday. This hands-on approach helps students develop essential life skills by partnering with local organizations on initiatives such as environmental conservation and cultural preservation. By fostering empathy, leadership, and responsibility, these activities enrich the educational experience beyond traditional classroom settings.
