Ramadan 2025: Abu Dhabi Students Serve Communities

In Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has introduced a groundbreaking initiative called Service Learning Fridays, which will take place every Friday during Ramadan. This innovative program aims to integrate real-world community service into the educational curriculum, aligning with the UAE’s Year of Community. Instead of traditional classroom lessons, students will engage in hands-on projects focused on environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and supporting People of Determination. These activities are designed to foster critical life skills such as empathy, leadership, and responsibility.

ADEK has partnered with local organizations to ensure that these experiences are tailored to different age groups, providing meaningful and impactful learning opportunities. The initiative is part of a broader effort to redefine education by connecting academic knowledge with real-world impact. By participating in activities like tree planting or recording oral histories with elders, students will gain a deeper understanding of their community and develop skills that go beyond textbook learning.

The launch of Service Learning Fridays has been welcomed by educators and community leaders alike. Principals like Sawsan Tarabishy of Bashair Private School have praised the initiative for its potential to boost participation and reinforce positive behavior among young people. Tarabishy noted that her school has already been involved in similar initiatives, including environmental projects and cultural events.

However, some parents have expressed concerns about the timing of the initiative, suggesting that it might be challenging for older students who are fasting and preparing for exams. Despite these concerns, the initiative is seen as a valuable step in developing essential skills like teamwork, responsibility, and innovation.

The UAE’s commitment to community engagement is evident in this initiative, which reflects the country’s vision for fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. As part of the broader ‘Year of Community’ initiative, Service Learning Fridays offer students a unique opportunity to contribute to their community while enhancing their educational experience.

The initiative also aligns with the UAE’s broader educational goals, which emphasize the importance of integrating learning with real-world experiences. By empowering students to make a positive impact, Service Learning Fridays embody the UAE’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community empowerment.

In addition to community service, schools like Bashair Private School are incorporating creative activities into their Friday programs. These include events like Career Day and Sustainability Day, where students engage in activities that promote cultural tolerance and environmental awareness.

Overall, Service Learning Fridays represent a significant shift in how education is approached in Abu Dhabi, focusing on practical, community-driven experiences that prepare students for life beyond the classroom.
