Sharjah Reveals 10 Iftar Cannon Sites for Ramadan

The Sharjah Police have announced 10 specific locations for the traditional iftar cannon firing during the holy month of Ramadan, a cherished custom symbolizing the end of daily fasting. These cannons will be stationed at key sites such as Al Majaz Waterfront, Muwailih Suburb Council, Al Siouh Suburb Council, Al Rahmaniya Suburb Council, and Al Hamriya Suburb Council. In the central region, notable locations include Al Dhaid Fort and Al Naeem Mosque in Al Madam’s Tawila’a neighborhood. Meanwhile, in the eastern region, the cannons will alternate between Kalba’s Clock Tower, Al Hafiya Lake, Khorfakkan Amphitheatre, and Dibba Al Hisn’s flagpole area.

This tradition dates back to 10th-century Egypt, where cannons were first used to signal the time for iftar. Over the years, it has become an integral part of Ramadan in the UAE, blending cultural heritage with religious observance. Dubai Police have also expanded their iftar cannon program this year, introducing seven new fixed locations across Dubai and three mobile cannons that will rotate among 17 spots throughout the emirate. Key sites include Expo City Dubai, Burj Khalifa, DAMAC Hills, and Madinat Jumeirah.

Ramadan is a sacred month in the Islamic calendar marked by fasting from sunrise to sunset. This year, it is expected to begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, depending on the crescent moon sighting. The Emirates Fatwa Council has urged Muslims to observe the crescent on Friday evening for confirmation. The firing of iftar cannons continues to be a unifying tradition that draws crowds of residents and visitors alike to witness this momentous event.
