In the heart of the UAE, a 60-year-old citizen, Khalifa Obaid Al Ghufli, is not only preserving his legacy but also inspiring the next generation of auto enthusiasts. As the head of the Falaj Al-Mualla Classic Cars Centre, Al Ghufli has amassed an impressive collection of over 200 classic cars from around the world, including the US and Japan. His journey into the world of classic cars began at a young age, fueled by his love for travel and exploration. This passion has led him to become a renowned expert, particularly in spare parts for vintage Land Rovers.
Al Ghufli’s influence extends beyond his collection; he has been an educator since 2011, teaching young people from the local community during summer holidays. He has worked with around 40 to 50 kids, instilling in them a passion for vintage cars. This year, he partnered with the Ministry of Community Development to work with high school students, securing a space at the youth centre in Falaj Al Mualla. The students have made rapid progress, collecting two cars in less than a month.
Al Ghufli notes that the youth are eager for hands-on learning experiences, often preferring practical education over traditional methods. He believes that kinetic sciences, integral to engineering, must be taught practically. This approach has sparked immense joy and passion for learning among the students.
With over 15 years of experience in collecting and restoring vehicles, Al Ghufli is recognized globally for his expertise in Land Rover spare parts. One of his most valuable possessions is a car that belonged to an English commander during the Suez Crisis, which he chose to keep despite receiving a substantial offer.
His influence extends beyond local borders, with universities and families from other Gulf countries reaching out to collaborate on educating students. Young Emiratis like Ahmed Al-Tamimi, who has been working on classic cars since he was nine, embody the growing enthusiasm for vintage vehicles. Ahmed advises aspiring enthusiasts to start working at home to develop their skills and build a connection with automobiles.
As gatherings for classic car enthusiasts become increasingly popular, the passion for restoration continues to grow. Ahmed actively participates in events like the Diriyah event in Saudi Arabia and gatherings organized by the Sharjah Classic Cars Club. His story highlights the satisfaction of restoration and the importance of networking within the community.
Looking ahead, Ahmed dreams of restoring more rare vehicles and cherishes the memories of his journey. The first time he started a Plymouth car with his father remains his most memorable moment, symbolizing the joy and beauty of classic car restoration.
