To celebrate the 100th anniversary of renowned Emirati poet Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais, the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has collaborated with the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation to release a limited edition silver commemorative coin. This initiative aligns with UNESCO’s recognition of Al Owais as one of the most influential literary figures in the UAE and the Gulf region. Al Owais is also associated with the prestigious Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Award, established in 1987, which honors exceptional Arab writers and artists, further solidifying his cultural legacy.
The commemorative coin features a poignant verse from Al Owais’s poetry on its obverse: “My homeland is my blood, flowing between my wings, as if it and soul are the same.” The reverse side includes a portrait of Al Owais, along with inscriptions from both the Central Bank of the UAE and the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation in Arabic and English. It also includes the phrase “Centenary of Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais” in Arabic, the years 1925-2025, and the coin’s face value. Weighing 60 grams with a nominal value of Dh100, only 1,000 of these coins will be issued.
Saif Humaid Aldhaheri, the CBUAE’s Assistant Governor for Banking Operations and Support Services, expressed pride in this collaboration, highlighting the Central Bank’s commitment to honoring cultural pioneers. He noted that the commemorative coin serves as a tribute to Al Owais’s memory and recognition of his contributions to culture, literature, and poetry.
Abdul Hamid Ahmed, Secretary-General of the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation, praised the initiative, emphasizing that UNESCO’s designation of 2025 as the Year of Culture reflects Al Owais’s significant achievements. He thanked the CBUAE for their collaboration, stating that the coin will be a lasting symbol of Al Owais’s legacy, honoring his contributions to literature and creativity.
The collaboration between the CBUAE and the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation underscores the importance of cultural heritage in the UAE. The commemorative coin not only celebrates Al Owais’s centenary but also serves as a testament to his enduring impact on Arab literature and culture.
