UAE Condemns Deadly Attack on UN Forces in South Sudan

The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned an attack on a helicopter affiliated with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF). The incident occurred in Upper Nile State, resulting in the death of a member of the international force and several government troops, as well as injuring two crew members. This attack is seen as a serious violation of international law and has raised concerns about the stability of the region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE issued a statement expressing deep condemnation of the attack. It emphasized that such actions undermine the principles of international law and called for respect for these principles to maintain peace and security. The UAE also extended its solidarity to the countries participating in UNMISS forces and offered condolences to the UN and the South Sudan government. Additionally, it wished for a speedy recovery for all those injured in the attack.

South Sudan’s president has appealed for calm following the incident, assuring that his country will not return to war. This comes at a time when a fragile power-sharing agreement between President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar is under strain due to recent clashes in Upper Nile State. The clashes have threatened the stability of the region and raised concerns about the potential for further conflict.

The UN Mission in South Sudan reported that its team was on a rescue mission to extract members of the South Sudanese army when their helicopter came under fire. The attack resulted in the death of a crew member and serious injuries to two others. A South Sudanese army general and other officers were also killed during the failed rescue mission. UNMISS has indicated that the incident may constitute a war crime, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The UAE’s condemnation reflects its commitment to supporting international peacekeeping efforts and upholding the rule of law. The incident underscores the challenges faced by peacekeeping missions in conflict zones and the need for continued international support to maintain stability in regions like South Sudan.
