UAE Gym-Goers Support Selfie Ban During Workouts

A recent study conducted by the research agency Perspectus has highlighted a significant trend among gym-goers in the UAE. Out of 2,000 participants polled, a substantial 61% supported a complete ban on taking selfies and videos inside fitness establishments. This sentiment is particularly interesting given that more than 80% of those polled admitted to having taken videos or pictures themselves at some point.

The survey also delved into what frustrates gym-goers the most during their sessions. The top two annoyances included individuals filming TikTok videos and those who talk loudly on their phones, each cited by 40% of respondents. Additionally, 30% found it bothersome when people take selfies and then leave without working out, while 27% disliked selfies being taken in general. Furthermore, 23% were annoyed by the presence of fitness influencers.

Sadia Anwar, a regular gym-goer, shared her perspective on the issue. Although she opposes an outright ban on filming, she emphasized the importance of being mindful of others. She noted that UAE laws already protect privacy, with Article 44 of the Cyber Law prohibiting unauthorized recording in public or private spaces.

Personal trainer Radoslaw Adam Lesniak supports a ban on filming inside gyms, citing concerns about individuals not wanting to appear in the background of videos. He advocates for obtaining permission before recording in public gym spaces, highlighting an instance where a gym-goer politely asked another member if they minded being filmed.

Lesniak also emphasized the importance of maintaining focus during workouts, suggesting that phones should be left in lockers. However, he noted exceptions for clients who want to capture memories. Despite these concerns, Lesniak acknowledges the positive impact of posting gym content online, as it can inspire others to start their fitness journeys.

Mubarak Hamad, another gym regular, supports banning filming due to concerns about appearing in the background of social media posts. He emphasizes the importance of gym etiquette, such as ensuring the area is clear before recording and not delaying others from using equipment.

The debate surrounding selfies and videos in gyms highlights broader societal questions about privacy, respect, and the role of social media in fitness culture. As gym influencer culture continues to grow, it raises questions about the balance between personal expression and communal space etiquette.
