UAE Paralyzed by Heavy Rains Nine Years Ago

On March 9, 2016, the UAE experienced one of its most severe rainstorms in recent history, causing widespread disruptions across the country. The storm brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, reaching speeds of up to 130 km/h in some areas. This intense weather was enough to uproot trees, break windows, and rip billboards from buildings. The impact was felt across major cities, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al Khaimah.

In Dubai, the police reported at least 253 traffic accidents during a seven-hour period, with over 3,200 emergency calls made. Despite major roads remaining open, traffic was significantly slowed down. An official noted that the rainfall exceeded predictions, with more than 50-60 mm falling per hour.

Abu Dhabi faced significant disruptions as well, with business activities coming to a halt. The Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, oil companies, banks, and financial institutions closed early due to unstable weather conditions. By noon, public and private sector employees were asked to return home, and office buildings, including the Sheikh Khalifa Complex housing Adnoc, were evacuated. Damages were reported at Gems American Academy in Khalifa City, where windows were shattered.

The Abu Dhabi International Airport was temporarily closed, while the Dubai International Airport experienced flight delays. In Ras Al Khaimah, heavy flooding was reported in areas like Al Manei, Shawkah, and Jais Mountain. Twenty-one vehicles were towed after getting stuck in flooded valleys, and 54 minor accidents were reported. Despite these challenges, no casualties were reported.

Fujairah also experienced significant flooding, with dams like Shawka and Al Hail overflowing. Police closed roads and warned the public to avoid flooded areas. In Sharjah, non-stop rain caused traffic congestion, but only minor accidents were reported. Authorities increased patrols to manage traffic flow and minimize congestion.

Throughout the storm, the resilience of UAE residents was evident. Despite the chaos, residents were seen helping each other. An Indian expat noted acts of kindness, such as drivers removing debris from roads to ensure safety for others. This community spirit highlighted the strength and solidarity of UAE residents during challenging times.

The storm may have brought life to a brief pause, but it did not dampen the spirit of the community. The UAE’s ability to respond to such severe weather conditions showcased its preparedness and the resilience of its people.
