UAE Students Balance Fasting with Exams During Ramadan

As Ramadan coincides with exam season, many students face the challenge of balancing their fasting routines with rigorous exam preparation. Additionally, Humaid recognizes the importance of maintaining a disciplined sleep schedule, as late-night gatherings during Ramadan can disrupt his routine.

Parents also play a crucial role in supporting their children during this period. Umm Mohammed, a mother from Sharjah, ensures her seventh-grade son follows a structured routine that allows him to be fully focused on his exams. She helps him wake up for Suhoor and then allows him to rest until morning to ensure he gets enough sleep. After Iftar, she assists him in reviewing his lessons to maximize his energy and concentration levels.

Government schools have begun sending out exam schedules, urging students to start revising for their exams. The second-semester exams for the academic year 2024-2025 are approaching, with different cycles of students taking exams in various subjects. Dr. Mazen Abou Chaaban, a pediatric specialist, advises against fasting for children who have never fasted before, as it can lead to fatigue and difficulty concentrating. He recommends a gradual approach to fasting and emphasizes the importance of proper hydration and a nutritious diet to maintain focus and concentration during exams.

For students who are already fasting, Dr. Chaaban suggests prioritizing rest and maintaining healthy eating habits. He recommends a light and nutritious Suhoor, such as dates with bananas, to provide lasting energy. Drinking plenty of water is also crucial to keep the body well-hydrated. By following these tips, students can feel physically and mentally prepared for their exams.
