UAE Students Unite to Serve Iftar to Workers

In a heartwarming display of community service, hundreds of students from various schools in the UAE gathered at Sajja Labour Park in Sharjah to serve Iftar meals to thousands of workers. This initiative, led by Dr. Azam Badr Khan, known as ‘Dr. Knee,’ aimed to instill values of giving, simplicity, and humbleness in young minds. The event was part of the “Let’s Walk Again” campaign, which regularly distributes meals with the help of volunteers but involves school children on Fridays to foster a culture of giving.

For students like Miwan Awasthy, a third grader at Wesgreen International School, the experience was both exciting and enlightening. “It was an amazing experience. I was so excited to come here and help the workers,” Miwan said. “I have always been taught to share and be kind, but today, I actually got to do it. It makes me happy.” This sentiment was echoed by many students who participated, including Nihaarika Subash from GEMS Our Own English School, who found the experience fulfilling and a great way to put her learning into practice.

The initiative not only provided meals but also offered students a chance to engage with workers, learn about their struggles, and understand the importance of gratitude and humility. Anup Sharda, a Grade 7 student, was deeply moved by the stories he heard from the workers, realizing how hard they work to support their families and the value of being grateful for what he has. Faculty members accompanying the students were impressed by their enthusiasm and noted that such events teach lifelong values of empathy and generosity.

Sreehari, a student at Our Own English High School, Sharjah Boys, who has been recognized for his community service, emphasized that volunteering is about making a difference in people’s lives, not just the quantity of what is given. His message to young volunteers was to seize opportunities to help, as small acts of kindness can create a significant impact.

The event left a lasting impression on all participants, reinforcing the UAE’s spirit of unity and support. Students expressed a desire to continue volunteering, recognizing the power of simple acts of kindness to change lives.
