As International Women’s Day approaches, a recent study highlights that 84% of women in the UAE are considering starting their own businesses. This entrepreneurial spirit is nearly equally embraced by both genders, with 49% of women and 47% of men identifying as entrepreneurs. The UAE’s dynamic business environment is driven by motivators such as financial independence, flexibility, and social impact. Millennial women lead this shift at 53%, while Gen Z women are also increasingly entering the entrepreneurial space at 44%. The most popular sectors for women-led businesses include food and beverage, online selling, and cosmetics, reflecting strong opportunities in consumer-driven industries.
Women-led businesses in the UAE are highly optimistic about their growth prospects, with 98% expecting revenue to increase over the next five years, outpacing their male counterparts at 85%. However, challenges remain, including a significant confidence gap and insufficient funding. Women are three times more likely than men to cite lack of confidence as a barrier, and 67% identify insufficient funding as the primary challenge. Despite these hurdles, women entrepreneurs are increasingly using side hustles to gain financial independence, with 56% having a side hustle compared to 52% of men.
The use of AI and digital security is also transforming how women entrepreneurs operate. While 75% of women founders regularly use AI, a higher percentage of men use it for decision-making. However, women report greater efficiency gains, with 85% experiencing significant cost or time savings. Cybersecurity remains a critical priority, with 35% of women entrepreneurs having been targeted by fraudsters.
The UAE’s supportive environment for women entrepreneurs is evident in its progressive policies and initiatives. As the country continues to empower women in business, it sets a strong example for gender equality and economic growth. With International Women’s Day serving as a reminder of the progress made and challenges ahead, the UAE remains committed to fostering an inclusive digital economy and equipping small businesses with the tools they need to thrive.
