Volunteers Restore Pre-Loved Items for Charity

In the heart of Dubai’s Al Quoz industrial area, a quiet revolution is unfolding. Thrift for Good, a nonprofit organization, has established a thriving retail and sustainability hub where volunteers work tirelessly to sort, wash, sew, and restore pre-loved items. This initiative not only promotes sustainable shopping but also supports global children’s charity projects by donating 100% of its profits to Gulf for Good. Founded by Jennifer Sault, Thrift for Good aims to combat fast fashion’s environmental impact while providing a transparent way to fund philanthropic endeavors.

The store’s success is largely attributed to its network of over 3,000 volunteers, with about 70 actively contributing at any given time. Volunteers like Carine Scharf and Judith Ann Hill play crucial roles, from front-of-house duties to back-end operations. Scharf, a marketing professional, also leverages her expertise to raise awareness and enhance the store’s appeal. The store has raised an impressive AED 3,283,794 for charitable projects and diverted 300,000 items from landfills.

Thrift for Good’s mission extends beyond fundraising; it fosters a community-driven space that encourages innovation and collaboration. The recently launched Youth Sustainability Club teaches young people how to creatively repurpose clothing, promoting a circular economy in fashion. By partnering with organizations like Serve the City and Kiswa UAE, Thrift for Good ensures that unused items are either donated or recycled, further reducing waste.

As Thrift for Good continues to grow, it invites more volunteers to join its cause, emphasizing that every action contributes to helping children worldwide and protecting the environment. This initiative serves as a beacon for sustainable living in Dubai, demonstrating how collective efforts can transform consumption habits and support meaningful causes.
