Iraq’s Stock Market Defies Regional Trends with Banking-Led Growth

Fri, Aug 14, 2026(2h ago)Business

Despite the typical summer slowdown, Iraq's stock market demonstrated remarkable resilience in July, outpacing major regional exchanges like those in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Dubai. The Rabee Securities Iraq Stock Exchange Index (RSISX) climbed 1.6 percent, largely fueled by a robust performance in the financial sector. Specifically, the banking index surged by 4.2 percent as investors flocked to institutions such as Al-Mansour Bank and the Bank of Baghdad. This positive momentum was further bolstered by optimistic sentiment surrounding Iraq’s deepening economic cooperation with the United States, alongside a significant recovery in the nation's oil exports.

While overall trading volumes cooled by 12 percent due to seasonal factors—dipping to $79.5 million—the market’s underlying health remained strong. A total of 27 companies saw their share prices rise, with standout performances from Gulf Commercial Bank and Gulf Insurance & Reinsurance. Furthermore, dividend distributions, such as those from Baghdad Soft Drinks, provided an additional boost to shareholder returns. According to Aysegul Ozge Ozgur of Rabee Securities, the market's ability to maintain upward pressure despite lower participation underscores a constructive shift in the economic landscape, setting a hopeful tone for future investment across the country’s energy and infrastructure sectors.
