Apple Pay Makes Official Debut in India

Wed, Sep 30, 2026(2h ago)Technology

Apple has officially introduced its payment service to India, marking a strategic move to tap into one of the world's most rapidly expanding digital economies. By partnering with Axis Bank, the country’s third-largest private lender, Apple is allowing iPhone and Apple Watch users to securely store their credit cards in their digital wallets for seamless transactions. This launch targets a growing demographic of affluent Indian consumers who are increasingly shifting toward premium devices, even as the market remains heavily dominated by affordable Android handsets.

The entry into India comes at a pivotal moment, as the local digital landscape undergoes significant changes. While the domestic United Payments Interface (UPI) currently handles the vast majority of digital transactions, the government has recently begun allowing banks to implement fees on larger UPI transactions. As Apple continues to solidify India’s role as a major manufacturing and export hub—now responsible for roughly a quarter of its global iPhone production—this payment integration signals a deeper commitment to the region. By offering a localized, convenient payment experience, Apple aims to secure a stronger foothold in a market that is rapidly transitioning toward a cashless future.
