Philippine authorities warn of fake overseas job offers
The Philippine Bureau of Immigration is issuing a stern warning to job seekers after intercepting a 50-year-old man at Mactan-Cebu International Airport who was attempting to leave the country under suspicious circumstances. The individual, who claimed he was headed to Vietnam before eventually working in Russia as a K9 handler, was instructed by his recruiters to travel as a tourist rather than a worker. This red flag, combined with the promise of a lucrative $3,500 monthly salary arranged entirely over WhatsApp, highlights the growing trend of deceptive recruitment tactics designed to bypass legal immigration channels.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado is urging citizens to be highly skeptical of any job offer that requires them to lie to airport officials or misrepresent the nature of their travel. Such requests are often hallmarks of human trafficking schemes disguised as employment opportunities. To avoid falling victim to these predators, the Bureau advises all prospective overseas workers to bypass informal recruiters and instead verify every offer directly through the Department of Migrant Workers, ensuring all necessary documentation is legitimate and legally processed before heading abroad.
