Jordan Security Forces Capture Three Suspects in Deadly Karak Church Attack
Jordanian security forces have apprehended three individuals suspected of orchestrating a violent attack during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud. The tragedy, which occurred last Friday in the Karak governorate, left nine people dead and injured roughly 40 others after gunmen unleashed gunfire on the congregation. According to the Public Security Directorate, the suspects were tracked to an abandoned house early Monday morning. A brief standoff ensued when the men refused to surrender and opened fire, but they were eventually wounded and taken into custody by authorities without any injuries to the security personnel involved.
While officials have labeled the incident as an act of "extremist terrorism," they have yet to confirm if the attackers were affiliated with any specific militant organizations. Interior Minister Mazen Al Faraya noted that a thorough investigation is underway to understand how these individuals were radicalized and promised that everyone involved would face justice. In response to the rare act of violence, King Abdullah has instructed security forces to maintain an "iron fist" approach to protect the country's Christian minority, leading to heightened security measures at sensitive locations such as foreign embassies and shopping centers across the nation.
