Thai Princess Bajrakitiyabha Passes Away at 47

Fri, Jun 12, 2026(45d ago)World

The Thai royal palace has officially announced the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, at the age of 47. The Princess, affectionately known as "Princess Bha," passed away peacefully on Thursday evening following a prolonged struggle with a severe abdominal infection that had kept her hospitalized since December 2022. According to the Bureau of the Royal Household, her condition steadily declined over the past three years, ultimately necessitating the use of medical support for her vital organ functions before her passing. She will be honored with a traditional royal funeral held with the highest distinctions at the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

Beyond her royal duties, the Princess was a highly educated figure who served as a prosecutor, a diplomat, and a dedicated advocate for human rights. A graduate of Cornell University, she often described herself as a "hybrid" professional, blending her legal expertise with her diplomatic responsibilities, which included serving as Thailand's ambassador to Austria and holding various influential roles within the United Nations. Her work was particularly noted for its focus on improving conditions for women in the prison system. While her passing leaves a significant void in the Thai royal family, the line of succession remains a complex matter, as the King has yet to officially name an heir in a monarchy shielded by some of the world's strictest lese-majeste laws.
