Syria Seeks Security Pact with Israel Amidst Regional Tensions

Mon, Jul 27, 2026(45d ago)World

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa recently signaled a potential shift in regional diplomacy, expressing an interest in securing a security agreement with Israel. During an interview with Al Jazeera, Sharaa emphasized that such a deal could serve as a foundation for lasting peace, provided that Syria’s territorial claims over the Golan Heights remain intact. As his administration works to stabilize the nation following the downfall of the Assad regime, Sharaa is actively seeking support from the international community to encourage a more balanced Israeli policy toward Syria, aiming to avoid further military escalation.

The geopolitical climate remains fragile, however, as Israeli forces have recently occupied strategic positions within Syrian territory, including areas near Mount Hermon. These maneuvers, coupled with recent shelling in villages like Maariyah, have drawn sharp criticism from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who described Israel's actions as a violation of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement. Despite these ongoing tensions, President Sharaa has clarified that his government intends to prioritize diplomacy over military intervention, specifically distancing his administration from conflicts in Lebanon while focusing on rebuilding Syria’s fractured economy and restoring its standing on the global stage.
