The Rise of the E20 Janta Party: Fuel Protests Explained

Mon, Jul 27, 2026(45d ago)World

Following the successful student-led movement that saw the Indian Education Minister step down, a new satirical group known as the E20 Janta Party has emerged on social media. Much like the previous "Cockroach Janta Party," this movement is calling for a change in government policy, specifically demanding that citizens be given the choice to purchase 100 percent petrol. The group argues that despite paying high taxes and registration fees for their vehicles, consumers are being forced into using E20 fuel—a blend of 80 percent petrol and 20 percent ethanol—which critics claim reduces fuel efficiency and poses damage risks to older vehicle models.

The movement has gained rapid traction, amassing over 25,000 followers as it prepares for a planned march to Parliament on August 4. Supporters, including members of the Delhi Taxi and Tourist Transporters and Tour Operators Association, argue that the rollout of E20 fuel was poorly communicated and forced upon the public without sufficient clarity regarding vehicle compatibility. While the government maintains that the E20 initiative is a strategic move to curb crude oil imports and support agricultural interests, this growing wave of dissent reflects a broader dissatisfaction among Indian citizens regarding the lack of affordable, compatible fuel options for all motorists.
