Siddaramaiah Announces Retirement from Electoral Politics Amidst Disillusionment

Tue, Jul 28, 2026(45d ago)World

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has officially declared his retirement from contesting elections, citing the pervasive influence of money in modern politics and the challenges of advancing age. The veteran politician, who has served nine terms as a legislator, expressed deep disappointment with the current state of Indian democracy, noting that the days of grassroots financial support from constituents have been replaced by a system where candidates are increasingly expected to pay to secure votes. He lamented that maintaining integrity in the current political landscape has become nearly impossible, marking a somber end to a long-standing career.

Beyond his concerns regarding political corruption, the 79-year-old leader acknowledged that his physical capacity to remain active in governance is declining. With about 18 months remaining in the current government’s tenure, Siddaramaiah noted that he would be in his early eighties by the time the next election cycle begins, making it difficult to match the energy and dedication required for public office. His departure reflects a broader trend among veteran Indian leaders, as he joins a list of seasoned regional figures who have navigated long tenures in public service, even as he stresses that it is finally time for him to step back.
