Nigeria’s First Ebola Case Flown to Switzerland for Specialized Care
Nigeria has officially transferred its first Ebola patient in over ten years to Switzerland via a medical evacuation flight. Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate confirmed that the patient, a Ugandan national married to a Swiss diplomat residing in Abuja, is currently in stable condition and showing significant clinical improvement. She was accompanied on the flight by her husband, who has shown no signs of infection and remains asymptomatic.
The case has triggered a complex investigation into how the patient contracted the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus. While Ugandan officials previously suggested the woman had visited the Democratic Republic of Congo—the site of a recent outbreak—her travel documentation and statements from Swiss authorities and the Africa CDC refute this claim. Instead, investigators are looking into a potential connection involving Entebbe airport, where both the patient and another confirmed Ebola case from Kenya transited on October 3.
