India to Introduce Polymer Rs10 and Rs20 Notes: What You Need to Know
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is preparing to introduce new polymer-based banknotes for the Rs10 and Rs20 denominations, following a recommendation from the finance ministry’s central board. Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, confirmed that the government has authorized field trials for these plastic-based notes. Importantly, authorities have clarified that there are no plans to phase out existing paper currency; instead, the polymer notes will circulate alongside traditional bills to test their durability and efficiency.
Reports indicate that the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL) has already initiated a global tender for the necessary polymer sheets to jumpstart these initial trials. While this marks a significant shift in currency technology for India, it remains a measured approach compared to the dramatic demonetization event of 2016, when high-value Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes were suddenly pulled from circulation. By testing these new materials on lower denominations first, the RBI aims to assess whether a broader transition to polymer substrate is viable for the country’s future monetary needs.
