R Rajesh, a dedicated swimming instructor and veteran rescue volunteer, tragically lost his life while saving a 61-year-old farmer named Benny. When Benny was trapped by the rising currents of the Kariyangode River in Kannur, Rajesh reached him and selflessly transferred his own life jacket to the drowning man. While Benny was safely pulled to the riverbank by the rescue team, the powerful current proved too strong for Rajesh, sweeping him away before he could be rescued.

In the wake of this tragedy, Kerala’s leadership has stepped forward to honor the fallen hero. Chief Minister VD Satheeshan praised Rajesh’s selfless nature, noting his history of service during previous floods, and promised that the state would complete the construction of Rajesh’s unfinished home. The government has also rolled out an extensive relief package for the state, which has been battered by severe landslides and flooding that have displaced thousands and claimed at least 25 lives.
