Egypt Unveils Plans for Landmark $1 Billion AI Data Center

Thu, Sep 10, 2026(1h ago)World

Egypt is taking a major step toward becoming a regional technology hub with the announcement of its first large-scale artificial intelligence data center. This ambitious $1 billion project, which will ultimately reach a 200-megawatt capacity, is set to utilize Nvidia’s high-performance graphics processing units to power next-generation AI models. The initiative will kick off with an initial $200 million investment to establish a 20-megawatt facility over the next three years, spearheaded by a strategic partnership between Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric, and Cassava Technologies.

The project highlights Egypt’s position in the ongoing geopolitical competition between the United States and China to secure influence over the continent’s digital infrastructure. While China’s Huawei had previously expressed interest in such a facility, Egypt opted for a U.S.-led consortium following discussions with major industry players like Nvidia, AMD, and Microsoft. Despite the nation's ongoing challenges with energy stability—a significant hurdle given that AI data centers require immense power—Cairo remains committed to fostering international partnerships to transform itself into a primary gateway for African technological development.
